Preface – This post is part of the Edge Computing series.

Introduction

IoT has changed the world with the innovation of smart objects or devices such as sensors, smartphones, smart TV, intelligent house, and many more. Internet of Things (IoT) connecting with edge computing, the devices are easy to access from any corner of the world. The data is processed in the order of zettabytes to resolve the data challenge and storage. Edge computing utilizes container technology to transport the data package from one place to another. With the use of this technology, data processing has become very easy and much closer to the user end. It has helped to resolve the issue of latency in the data processing. Here we will learn about the container as a service in edge computing.

What is Container Service?

The invention of the container service has arrived from the courier industry or package industry, where the transport is done as a unit with containers or packed sizes for easy storage and smooth transportation of the goods. Similarly, in edge computing, the container service packs an application as a single unit, allowing the software and dependencies to work together with other processes. Due to this process, the data migration has neglected the difference between hardware, software, and operating system, thus allowing smooth deployment of software to the network. The technology came into the scope in the 2000s, along with free BSD jails, where the container management system holds the industry. In 2017 Kubernetes helped container Technology easier to manage. Now the service is adopted by various organizations for easy deployment. The container service works with virtualization API and a web interface to enable users to scale their containers and clusters for easy management.

Working of the container as a service at the edge

There are many more benefits of the cloud as a service, such as providing low latency and high availability. The fantastic and several advantages are the only reason the service has become an essential part of Edge computing. The use of this service(Container as a service) now as computing requires less time and less post in deployment and management of applications across the world. The containers are portable for any application and can be deployed anywhere. Also, the container service provides the solution in terms of application size for easy migration.

Advantages of the container as a service

  • The services are very smooth to deploy and help quickly deploy software and data. Also, it takes a few seconds to create a destroy a container.
  • It helps in providing portable containers to work with clouds.
  • The services are cost-effective as it takes a meager cost to be paid while the user.
  • It provides security to the host system and updates and security patches timely when required.

Conclusion

The container-as-a-service (CaaS) with an edge-as-a-service (EaaS) has handled a lot of complexities in the management and deployment of applications, servers, and software. The workflows have become much more accessible than earlier and help control real-time traffic. The data processing efficiencies have also increased, due to which customer satisfaction comes across.
