Private Cloud in Cloud Computing

Preface – This post is part of the Cloud Computing series.

Introduction

A private cloud is a type of Cloud which deliver resources through a private network or only a single organization. The private Cloud is the opposite of the public Cloud. In the public Cloud, the resources are available to all organizations, and everybody can access them, whereas in private, resources are available to a specific group of people.

Private Cloud can be used for various applications or services like databases, machine learning, artificial intelligence, automation, etc. It has a high level of security and privacy to data through internal hosting and firewall. It avoids the misuse of data and data conflicts.

Examples of private clouds are Ubuntu, HP Data Center, Microsoft, etc. The companies that use personal data are Snowflake for the data platform, Canva for design software, GitLab for DevOps software, etc.

How does Private Cloud work?

A private cloud is a single-tenant environment, meaning the organization using it (the tenant) and the resources are not shared. The cloud provider hosts a hosted private cloud by implementing storage technology. It is valid for only a single organization. It can be made through virtualization technology to combine physical and software components.

The storage of public and private clouds is similar. They provide scalability, usability, and flexible storage architecture. At the same time, customization and control are available for dedicated resources which are not available in a public cloud.

There are two models of the private cloud:

#1 Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

It allows the company to use infrastructure like networking resources on demand, storage, and memory.

#2 Platform as a Service (PaaS)

It allows an organization to deliver software and hardware tools via a network. These tools are needed for the development of applications. Google App Engine and Windows Azure are some examples of PaaS.

Types of Private Cloud

  • Hosted
Hosted private cloud vendors offer cloud servers in their own data centers and are responsible for security management. The servers are not shared between different organizations.
  • Managed
In this type of private cloud, the services are managed by third-party vendors. This type of private Cloud is helpful for companies that have less number of staff. The vendor provides computing infrastructure, maintenance, upgrades, and even remote management of the private Cloud.
  • Virtual
A virtual private cloud is a cloud computing environment with a public cloud. It is an isolated public cloud to provide a virtual private environment. Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) lets you control connectivity, security, and networking. Amazon is an example of VPC.

Private Cloud Architecture

A private cloud is a type of on-site cloud computing architecture accessed, managed, and secured only by an independent enterprise or organization, providing additional virtual processing and storage resources.

The architecture aggregates resources in a data center into a single pool of resources. It allows companies to architect or work through a data center using Software-defined networking (SDN) and Virtual machines (VMs). The most significant advantage of the private cloud architecture is that it allows customization and control of the application. Users can work according to that and with high authentication and configuration.

Conclusion

The private cloud helps maintain confidentiality and data protection from third-party sites and hackers. The architecture is maintained through virtualization technology. Different types of private clouds can be chosen as per needs.
