Preface – This post is part of the Cloud Computing series.

Introduction

A Data Center is an infrastructure that consists of servers, storage, routers, and firewalls and acts as a centralized platform for resources. Large organizations use these data centers for storing data and other services.

A data center is a center of operations for IT. It’s a repository for most business-critical systems, where most business data is stored, processed, and distributed to users. It also plays a significant role in Power supplies, electrical switches, and backup generators, protects the data center hardware, and keeps it up and running. The data center has evolved and shifted to accommodate the necessary technology of today.

How does the Datacenter work?

The components of the Data Center work together to provide access to applications supporting business operations and spread workloads across various machines to ensure efficient operation. Data maintenance is done by regular inspections, continuous testing, predictive maintenance, and corrective maintenance.

Its infrastructure is designed by realizing economies of scale and by integrating sensitive systems in one place. The physical structure of the data center is well-designed and appropriately insulated to optimize temperature controls and energy efficiency.

Components of Data Center

  • Networking – Connects the data between nodes over a shared medium.
  • Compute Power– The processing power and memory needed to run applications are usually supplied by enterprise servers.
  • Storage – Datacenter provides various storage services with backup options and automatic updations.
  • Power Supplies – Primary electricity is provided to compensate for short-term power outages and is used for servers, switches, routers, and related IT infrastructure.
  • Cable Management System – Systems and equipment to keep the cabling orderly and accessible for the enterprise.

What are security measures required for the data center?

  • Data centers have highly controlled management on who access its resources. It helps in preventing privacy theft and data conflicts.
  • The employees are given proper training about the physical security measures of a data center.
  • Regular physical security testing ensures that gaps in the system are caught before being exploited.
  • Data centers keep data up to date with the latest security patches and secure protocols such as SSH or HTTPS.
